Shopping center fire in Dallas claimed the lives of hundreds of animals.

The 579 animals in the pet shop at Plaza Latina in Northwest Dallas died from smoke inhalation, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans said in a statement.

DALLAS: More than 500 animals, primarily small birds, were killed in a fire that started at a Dallas retail center on Friday morning, according to authorities.

According to a statement from Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans, smoke inhalation killed the 579 animals in the pet store located in Plaza Latina in Northwest Dallas.The animals were never exposed to the fire’s flames. it took up to 45 firefighters and two hours to put out the two-alarm fire, according to Evans.

“All of the animals in the shop unfortunately died from smoke inhalation, even though DFR personnel searched and attempted rescue,” Evans stated.

The fire did not damage anyone. According to Evans, there was significant damage to the big, one-story shopping center’s construction, including a partially fallen roof.

The shopping center’s Facebook page referred to it as “a place where people can go to eat, and buy all sorts of Latin goods and services” and featured a number of local shops. Prayers were requested for the families who work there in a Spanish-language message on the Facebook.

According to Evans, the cause of the fire is being investigated and was not immediately identified.
